Developments and articles of interest from the past couple of weeks:

  • Dr John Steen from the University of Queensland writes of innovating in an emergency (within the context of the recent Brisbane flooding). "Sometimes when there is an urgency to come up with a solution there is a temptation to design something from scratch. What I have seen in my suburb reminds me that to respond quickly, take a look around, see what’s already working and then adapt it." [1.   • In this post John's colleague, Dr Tim Kastelle, looks at the persistent question of whether a dedicated innovation team or a distributed innovation effort is better for organisations. Tim identifies some different roles an innovation team can play in supporting an organisation's innovation efforts, and the importance of knowing which role you want a team to play and skilling and equipping it accordingly.

  • There are many many innovation tools out there - in this piece Jeffrey Phillips warns about being too focussed on any one particular tool. "What needs to happen before any firm becomes enamored of tools and methods is a careful consideration of the opportunity or problem to solve, the strategic context in which innovation is important, and an evaluation of tools and techniques that can provide value."
