Weekly bits of interest - 18 July 2011

Developments and articles of interest from the last two weeks:

  • The US Government has announced their third annual SAVE (Securing Americans Value and Efficiency) Award, which is a contest for federal employees to submit ideas about how to cut waste, save taxpayer dollars, and make government more effective and efficient.

  • Prompted by the release of our Innovation Toolkit, public servant Craig Thomler puts forward his suggestions for building an innovation framework in public sector agencies.

  • William Eggers and John O'Leary discuss some of the opportunities and challenges provided by cross-boundary collaboration.

  • Over at OZLoop, Steve Davies suggests that Australia needs to make innovation more inclusive and for public agencies to be more deliberate about including citizens in driving innovation and reform in the public sector.

  • Brad Power provides some advice on how to engage the front line in process improvement, including setting aside time for workers to identify improvements, provide management processes for implementing ideas, and introducing software tools for sharing process improvement ideas.
