Be inspired! Or help others be inspired!

While putting together the Public Sector Innovation Annual Report 2011-2012 I have been following up a few leads recommended by people in our network. Every piece has provoked thought, provided insight, and generally got me excited about being alive. What an amazing time we live in, albeit slightly bi-polar!

I particularly loved Little girl standing on a white beach with her back to the photographer over looking very blue water and a coral reef. Eric Young’s opening plenary at the Entrepreneurs Foundation Corporate Social Impact Conference on March 9, 2012. His ‘shock of the possible’ was in stark contrast to the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report 2012.While both were incredible pieces of work, to me they highlighted the massive gap between problem definition, and transformational change. But together they made me see the possible in the impossible. I want to hop in Eric’s ‘Magic Canoe’ right now!

While reviewing these references, I got to thinking how useful it would be for us to crowd source from our network members the innovation absolute must reads/views for 2012.

What have you come across this year that stopped you in your tracks, made you want to be a better human being, or just made you happy to be alive? Is there anything that has given you purpose on your innovation journey or sparked the match inside you for action to make the world a better place?

Comment below with your suggestions and we will collate them for network members :)

  1. Hi everyone…FSANZ is a small regulatory agency with 140 or so staff. We are never going to need or experience paradigm shifts in the way we operate. Innovation to us means improvements to efficiency and effectiveness. This has been the focus of our Innovation Practice Group during the year – learning from larger, better resourced departments and agencies, and organising challenges and events for staff. We have prepared an innovation process for the agency and introduced innovation as a pathway to higher performance appraisals. Baby steps, but interest is growing.

  2. Hi Paul! Thanks for your thoughtful contribution. I really enjoyed learning more about the City of Kingston and their approach to citizen engagement incorporating social media. I also liked the idea of the knowledge exchange platform you have! Well done!

  3. Often innovation concepts are not well grounded. This conversation (March 2012) with a local government CEO shows how leadership can make a difference to better engage the community and an organisation’s workforce using social media for innovation and problem solving. http://www.iken.net.au/communities-of-practice/case-studies/local-government-leadership-community-engagement-social-media-a

  5. If we can think big like Curiosity then I can’t see why we can’t think big about other challenges
Whatever happens at 3.30pm today, it certainly inspires me!
