The Scenario: You are a regional natural resource management (NRM) organisation looking to partner with other stakeholders including different levels of government, community and Indigenous groups, research bodies, NGOs and corporations. Your objective is to develop compelling value propositions that result in partnerships for your organisation with companies and other stakeholders to produce outstanding NRM outcomes by 2017.
This was challenge put to 80 participants, many were not traditional NRM stakeholders, at the Creating Shared Value with Business – Practical Innovation Workshop, sponsored by Caring for our Country, in Canberra on 6 June 2012. This workshop was one of many activities undertaken during Innovation Week.
The focus of the workshop was on learning from successful corporate engagement approaches across a range of sectors, and then using these approaches, along with techniques such as foresighting, to consider future opportunities for effective corporate engagement and creating shared value in NRM.
Throughout the morning a series of insightful and inspiring presentations were given by government, private and community sector leaders including:
- Mike Baldwin, Head of Innovation & Implementation, Westpac Institutional Bank
- Lynne Strong - Landcare Farmer of the Year
- Percy Knight – CEO of Wiradjurai Condobolin Corporation
- Gerard Tuckerman – Manager, Natural Systems,Great Lakes Council
- Dr Anna Carr - Manager, Research Engagement and Outlook, Business Strategy and Systems, ABARES
These presentations focused on innovation, foresighting, cross-sectoral partnering and the importance of developing compelling value propositions for effective stakeholder engagement.
During the afternoon workshop sessions were conducted in response to the above scenario and the insights from the speakers. Four groups each had 60 minutes of intense concurrent intra group collaboration to consider the above scenario. There were 20 people in each group – a mix from the public, private and community sectors with each group led by a professional NRM facilitator.
The workshop concluded with the groups coming together to create a range of compelling value propositions in response to the scenario, along with the shared vision ‘A vibrant productive sustainable landscape in the region underpinned by a cohesive community’.
The outcomes of the day included increased awareness of trends and opportunities in the area of cross-sectoral partnerships and the development of initial corporate partnering ideas by participants to take back to their organisations.
